The procurement of the 96 transformers and their accessories, according to the lawmakers, was part of their constituency projects for the year 2009, under which the transformers go at three each per member of the state legislature.
Speaking while commissioning the project, the state governor, Otunba Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala stated that the choice of transformers by members of the House of Assembly as part of their constituency projects was “a recognition of the common enemy, inadequacy of power supply across the state and indeed the entire country.”
While congratulating the lawmakers for contributing to effective provision and distribution of power supply in the state, the governor remarked that with adequate power supply, jobs would be created and consequently poverty eradicated.
According to him, the issue of erratic power supply was one major factor that had adversely affected the nation’s economy and a fact that a number of strategic industries had relocated to neighbouring countries as a consequences of perennial power outage. The negative development, he pointed out, had swelled the unemployment market.
The governor declared that in as much as stable power supply was a major part of his administration’s 13-point agenda, the Independent Power Project [IPP] upon which the state government had embarked, along the Lagos/Ibadan expressway was fast on course.
“The people of Oyo State will have cause to smile when the IPP comes on stream and it will boost economic activities all over the state,” he said.
The governor therefore appealed to the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) to energise the newly-acquired transformers where ever they were installed, just as he stressed the need for the members of the State House of Assembly to treat everyone equally in their constituencies. All speaking on the occasion, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Moruf Atilola, noted with delight that the project would be a milestone in Oyo State as it would alleviate the suffering of the masses.
The Speaker said: “Constituency project is a fulfilment on the part of the members of the Oyo State House of Assembly, of the promises made to the people in their respective constituencies before their election into offices. To this end, the sum of N320,000,000 representing 50 per cent of 2009 budgeted sum, had been expended to purchase three brand new electricity transformers and accessories of various capacities per honourable member.
