Henceforth, it is an offence for drivers in Oyo State to use vehicles for commercial purposes without due registration or painting in the official colours of the state government, Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers NURTW), Oyo State Chapter, Alhaji Taofeek Ayorinde, has said.
Oyerinde, who spoke at a press conference in Lagos, said the development was sequel to rampant cases of kidnapping and other criminal activities involving taxi cabs in Oyo State, adding that the union was poised to rid itself of criminal elements with a view to making Oyo State habitable
According to him, people in the state should look out for commercial vehicles with official painting of white with blue stripes, and should report any suspicious activities to the police.
He said though complaints were mostly on mini taxis commonly called Micra, but the attention of the union was also towards other vehicles especially those used for inter-state transportation.
He added that the new directives were in line with the efforts of the state governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi to rid the state of all criminal activities in order to make peace reign.
Oyerinde said that official painting of Oyo State commercial vehicles enables the union to identify perpetrators of the criminal acts from others in states in the federation, while noting that the decision was already yielding positive results as a task force set up by the union had so far arrested some defiant drivers and had handed them over to the police.
