In a renewed push to tackle poor literacy levels in public schools, the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), in partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and UK-based Universal Learning Solutions (ULS), has begun intensive training for primary school teachers in modern reading methods.

The six-day programme, which started on March 23, 2026, focuses on equipping teachers with the Jolly Phonics approach—a globally recognised system that teaches reading and writing through sounds, actions, stories, and songs.

The initiative is part of UBEC’s Teacher Professional Development (TPD) programme and is aimed at improving classroom delivery and learning outcomes across public primary schools in the state.

Speaking at the flag-off in Ibadan, SUBEB Chairman, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, said the training—running for over a decade—has become a critical tool in strengthening foundational literacy among pupils.

Represented by the Director of School Services, Mrs Kehinde Funmi Adeyomoye, Adeniran noted that Jolly Phonics has significantly improved pupils’ ability to read, write, and communicate effectively since its introduction.

He explained that the method’s multi-sensory and interactive approach makes learning engaging and easier to grasp, while also boosting teachers’ confidence and effectiveness in the classroom.

To deepen impact, Adeniran called for the integration of technology, continuous assessment, and stronger parental involvement to support pupils’ learning beyond the classroom.

Also speaking, ULS Chief Executive Officer, Gary Foxcroft, represented by Country Director Patrick Uzu, described Jolly Phonics as a child-centred, results-driven system that has gained global acceptance for its ability to deliver quick improvements in literacy.

He said the programme has already contributed to measurable gains in reading skills among pupils in Oyo State and offers a pathway to more equitable learning opportunities.

Foxcroft also commended UBEC’s sustained support, noting that the programme is now implemented across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
