Parenting: A call for re-examination

In the past, when a child reached the first stage of school enrolment that’s provisionally five to six years old,   wrong perceptions were instilled in their mind that they could be the breadwinner for their family by obtaining educational qualifications instead of being fully educated on the need to acquire skills that could be used to make a positive impact on society.

The parents’ failure to engage their children to imbibe this has partly led Nigeria to where it is – a country bedevilled with so many crimes.

This mistaken belief has to be timely and entirely changed through exposing our children to a variety of productive and creative skills that can help them meet all of their needs.  Relying heavily on government for jobs  is a very huge mistake that yields nothing but disappointment!

Let us learn from  countries such as China, South Korea, and Malaysian citizens who have become productive as a result of engaging their youth in various aspects of skill training schemes with the support of the governments. And they were successful in channeling  them further to where they are now in terms of development.

I, therefore, urge Nigerian governments at all levels to replicate China’s Green Business Option (GBO) at both secondary and tertiary levels, which can feasibly pave the way for their products to acquire skills to develop themselves and become self-reliant rather than waiting for government jobs.
