Parents and teachers of Local Education Authority (LEA) Primary School in Gurfata community, Ibwa ward of Gwagwalada Area Council in the FCT, have raised concern over the dilapidated state of classrooms in the school.
They warned that the situation could disrupt academic activities as pupils prepare to resume for the second term, especially with the onset of the rainy season.
During a visit to the community, some parents told Abuja Metro that the condition of the classrooms makes learning difficult, particularly during rainfall.
A parent, Mr Abdullahi Usman, said the roof of a block of six classrooms was blown off over a year ago, leaving pupils exposed to harsh weather conditions.
“The ceilings are rotten, and the classrooms get flooded whenever it rains heavily,” he said.
He added that pupils are often forced to return home during rainfall, urging the area council to collaborate with the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) to rehabilitate the structures.
“Last rainy season, both teachers and pupils had no place to stay. Children had to run home at the slightest sign of rain,” he added.
Another parent, Ibrahim Zakariah, described the situation as worrisome, noting that no intervention had been made despite the prolonged decay.
A teacher, who spoke anonymously, said the school has over 219 pupils but lacks adequate facilities.
He added that lessons are sometimes conducted under trees to shield pupils from the sun.
The Chairman of the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA), Markus Dangana, described the situation as a nightmare, adding that efforts to get intervention have yielded no results.
He also decried the lack of desks and chairs in the school.
Efforts to reach the FCT UBEB spokesperson, Lawal Ibrahim, were unsuccessful.
However, a senior UBEB official confirmed that the board is aware of the situation and said renovation efforts would commence in the coming weeks.
