The Kaduna State Project Coordinator of AGILE, Maryam Sani Dangaje, has called on parents to stop sending their adolescent girls to hawk on the streets.
Dangaje urged them instead to enroll the girls in school to acquire education.
According to her, hawking is dangerous for girls as it makes them more vulnerable to molestation and abuse.
The AGILE Coordinator spoke during the State Ministry of Education’s Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project Awareness and Advocacy Campaign on Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) across benefiting public secondary schools supported by the World Bank in the state.

She explained that the cash amounts for each beneficiary have been increased due to economic hardship.
“Those who received N5,000 now get N15,000, while those receiving N10,000 now get N25,000,” she said.
Maryam emphasized the importance of parents prioritizing their children’s education especially that of girls for a better future.
“Stop sending adolescent girls to hawk on the streets because hawking is very dangerous. We have never seen where hawking generates benefits, but rather we have seen where adolescent children are molested. Please encourage your daughters to go to school so that they have a bright future in society,” she said.
The Coordinator further commended Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, and other stakeholders for their support and commitment to girl-child education across the state.
In her remarks, World Bank representative and Education Specialist, Mistura Rufai, described the sensitization as very important in educating parents about the CCT and encouraging them to focus on their daughters’ education.
She noted that 70 percent school attendance is a key requirement for the CCT and urged parents to ensure their children meet this condition to benefit from the cash support.
“We want to see enrollment grow, we want to see girls resume school on time. We want them to know that they don’t have to do business before going to school because the CCT can meet their families’ urgent needs,” she said.
She emphasized that the aim of the CCT is to support girl-child education and commended Kaduna AGILE for a job well done in ensuring the project’s goals are achieved.
A community leader in Rigachikun, Alhaji Idris Maiwada, lauded the AGILE project for the sensitization program and urged parents to heed the advice given by ensuring that their children maintain the required attendance. He said this will go a long way in supporting their children’s education in the community.
