A Nigerian-born physician and clinical researcher, Dr. Henry Onyemarim, is receiving international attention after co-authoring a groundbreaking study that suggests Parkinson’s disease (PD) may not worsen heart-related hospital outcomes, as previously believed.
The study, published in the journal Heliyon, sheds new light on the unexpected interplay between PD and atrial fibrillation (AF), a common cardiac arrhythmia.
The research, which analysed data from over 1.8 million hospital admissions in the United States, revealed a surprising outcome: patients suffering from both Parkinson’s disease and atrial fibrillation were not more likely to die in the hospital than those with AF alone. In fact, the study found that PD patients had significantly lower odds of developing acute heart failure and life-threatening ventricular tachycardia.
“We expected Parkinson’s disease to exacerbate cardiac risk in atrial fibrillation, but the data told a more nuanced story,” said Dr. Onyemarim, who currently serves as a Clinical Research Associate in Michigan. “The diminished neurohormonal activity in Parkinson’s may be playing a protective role against dangerous heart rhythms.”
Using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS), the largest publicly available hospital database in the United States, the study reviewed over 19,000 patients diagnosed with both PD and AF. The researchers meticulously controlled for variables such as age, race, sex, insurance status, and co-existing illnesses, to ensure the results were not coincidental.
Dr. Onyemarim’s journey into clinical research began in Nigeria, where he graduated from Delta State University with a degree in Medicine. He also holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Human Physiology from the University of Nigeria. He is currently pursuing a Master’s in Molecular Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine in the United States.
The physician-scientist is no stranger to complex research topics, having previously worked on infertility awareness, pharmacological treatment of heart failure, and outcomes in rare diseases. However, he says this latest study underscores his growing focus on real-world patient outcomes and the connections between systemic diseases.
“The goal is to break down the silos in medicine,” Onyemarim explained. “There’s an urgent need for cardiologists and neurologists to sit at the same table when treating complex cases. We’re only beginning to understand how interconnected these systems truly are.”
For Dr. Onyemarim, the impact of research must always circle back to patient care. “Every project I’m involved in is driven by one question: ‘How does this help the patient at the bedside?’ If it doesn’t translate there, then we’ve missed the point,” he said.
In addition to his ongoing research into neuro-cardiac interactions and predictive biomarkers, Dr. Onyemarim mentors young African researchers and advocates for more inclusive health studies globally. He remains committed to bridging gaps in healthcare access and advancing equity in clinical research.
