So far, PAN has not achieved its goal to train 1,000 mechanics but the company has started the programme with the few mechanics they could get, under PAN Learning Center, which handles the training of PAN technicians and staffs- not PAN Tech.
Mechanics who would qualify should have, at least, SSCE for basic communication and understanding. The programme is to last nine months for the Modern Auto Maintenance Technique (MAMT), which will take the mechanics through a course of auto mechatronics, spray painting, panel works and welding and mechanical. At the end of this course, each mechanic should be able to solve the problems on new generation vechicles, become employable at any national or international automobile outfit or become self employed.
Our interest in PAN Nigeria is not only training the mechanics to become experts with Peugeot brands but also other generic factors of mechatronics that affect other brands which can help the mechanics take on additional modern brands vehicles. Besides that, we know PAN Tech handles research into other brand which could fit into any of the assembly line available. So it would not be out of place for PAN to spread its scope as it is doing. In PAN Tech are also put interest into other for instance the Saipa brand from Iran.
PAN Nigeria has had some challenges that include reaching out to stakeholders at the grassroots level. PAN Nigeria has informed us it is not relenting on its efforts until 1,000 mechanics have been trained.
It therefore, means by the time most of the mechanics have graduated from the programme all should be able to handle modern cars. Premium cars may be included but we can’t say for certain until we meet any of the trained mechanics. Our journey to get solutions has not ended. More will unfold to the current challenges motorists will face.
