A female party supporter, simply identified as Nana, was burnt to death after the vehicle she was riding in caught fire during a campaign rally for the just-concluded council elections in Suleja town, Niger State.
A witness, Ubale Bala, told Abuja Metro yesterday that the fatal incident took place on Thursday near the main junction in the Maje community, on the outskirts of Suleja town.
Bala explained that the campaign team, comprising all candidates for councilors and the chairman, under the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), had left the Suleja metropolis that afternoon and made stopovers at the Kwamba and Maje communities.
He stated that an open-body vehicle occupied by the victim and others somersaulted due to reckless driving.
“The vehicle was also conveying a power generator and the sound system, and immediately after it somersaulted, the generator caught on fire,” Bala added.
He said, “The victim could not be pulled out of the vehicle immediately, which led to the burning of the lower part of her body downward.”
Another witness, Abdulmumini Ahmad, disclosed that prior to the fatal crash, four party members had sustained cut injuries while campaigning at the Kwamba area.
This followed a confrontation between supporters of the one-term and two-terms contestants within the party.
Ahmad said the campaign rally was immediately halted following the second incident that led to Nana’s death.
“She was rushed to the Talba Hospital in Suleja Metropolis where she was confirmed dead, before she was buried later in the day,” he stated.
When contacted, the Police Area Commander in Suleja, Muhammad Sani Musa, said the matter was yet to be officially reported to his office.
