Dr Adegbe made this known in his Nigeria @ 50 Golden Jubilee Celebration Message to the nation.
According to him, Nigeria has not made much progress in the past 50 years but is better off than when it started the journey of nationhood and so, there is every reason to celebrate.
As we celebrate our golden jubilee as an independent nation, we have every reason to give thanks to the Almighty for keeping us together all these years despite all odds. It is true, we are not yet in our promised land but one thing is sure, we are no more where we used to be 50 years ago. The development may be slow due to poor leadership yet we are moving forward,” he said.
He said incessant ethno-religious crisis and chronic bad leadership are responsible for the slow pace of development and advised that old politicians stop heating the polity and allow new crop of leaders to create an atmosphere of peace, where sports, the only thing that unites Nigerians, can be developed.
“The government should encourage sports development across this nation. Not only will this encourage our youths to showcase their talents, it will reduce crime in no small way. It is said that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. There are countries that have no oil, yet, they survive on sports and tourism. Let’s encourage sports development right from the primary school up to the university and let sports development be part of our school curriculum. You will agree with me that whenever Nigeria is playing, especially football, no matter the tribe, religious belief or sex, we are forced to think Nigeria. Therefore, let’s focus on what unites us than taking steps that will divide us,” he said.
He added that “agriculture must be given priority not mere propaganda. This will make our youths to remain in rural settings and other small towns and stop running to big cities looking for white- collar jobs which cannot be found easily.”
He prayed that God should give Nigeria God-ordained leaders like Moses and Joshua, who led the people of Israel during troubled times on their journey to the promised land, so that Nigeria will be able to get to its ordained place.
