The Nigeria Union of pensioners, Nasarawa State council, has appealed to Governor Abdullahi Sule to as a matter of urgency offset the backlog of local government pensioners’ gratuity and outstanding two months arrears across the 13 local government areas of the state.

The state chairman of the union, Alhaji Hudu Baba-Abdullahi, who made the appeal while speaking with Aso Chronicles in Lafia on Tuesday, urged the state government to address and stabilize payment of gratuity, particularly to local government pensioners.

The union chairman recalled an address sent to the state council by the national president of the body, Mr. Godwin Abumisi, in which he expressed displeasure over the attitude of the state government for not releasing funds for the payment of consequential adjustments of pension in the state.

He disclosed that “the federal government has released the enabling circular for the much-awaited consequential adjustments of pension, effective April 2019.”

“Most state governments are yet to give effect to the circular as released by the Salaries and Wages Commission,” he added.

He lamented that some members of the union were sabotaging the effort of the union in the state to ensure that its members get their pension as and when due.

He, however, warned that such attitude would no longer be tolerated. He urged his members, particularly those living in rural areas to be wary of individuals who parade themselves as protecting their interest and were collecting illegal levies in the state.

Mr. Abumisi, however, appreciated the magnanimity of state governors who have been treating their pensioners with respect and dignity.
