Retirees of local government workers in Anambra State may not receive their 26 months gratuity arrears soon, the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Chief Jerry Nnubia has said.
He explained that labour had made several pleas to the state government to consider the plight of the pensioners having spent their prime time in service to their state.
Speaking to newsmen in Awka, the labour boss expressed worry that most of them were currently facing serious hardship, a development he said had instilled fear among the workers due for retirement.
"The condition is already demoralizing local government workers whose retirement were due as most of them saw their impending retirement from service as a period of hardship due to non -payment of gratuities for local government workers," he said.
Nnubia who acknowledged the disparity in the pay package between ministry workers and their local government counterparts, regretted that efforts by the union on the state government to correct the anomaly has proved abortive.
