On September 30, the PCNI Subcommittee on Peace-building, Security and Stabilization in partnership with IPCR organized a one-day stakeholders’ peace dialogue between Michika and Madagali communities. The townhall meeting held at the Sani Isa Hall in Mubi, Adamawa State. Recently, there have been simmering underlying tensions between both communities revolving around politics and sectarian distrust with the growing risk of these escalating into open conflict. Michika and Madagali are both in the area of Adamawa State that was heavily impacted by the insurgency.
In the course of the dialogue, Brig. Gen. HPZ Vintenaba who represented Lt. Gen. T.Y. Danjuma urged both communities to embrace peace having suffered so much destruction of life and property as a result of the insurgency. He stressed that further recovery and development of the communities could only proceed if they promoted peaceful coexistence and tolerance. It will be recalled that Madagali and Michika are among the local government areas in Adamawa in which PCNI will oversee the reconstruction of schools, hospitals, and veterinary facilities destroyed by the insurgency. This was disclosed by the PCNI Vice Chair, Mr. Tijjani Tumsah on the 22nd of August while receiving an official delegation from the ministries of health and agriculture from Adamawa.
The Director General, IPCR, Mr. Oshita O. Oshita represented by Mr. Mbah Chukwuemeka, said ‘’that today’s dialogue is a part of the series of outputs for peace in the community.” He encouraged openness and truthfulness as means of peacebuilding assuring the communities of continuous dialogue until peace is achieved. The UNHCR said it had engaged the IPCR since 2016 and had conducted a series of sensitization programmes on peacebuilding in the 21 Local Government Areas of Adamawa state which had birthed the Community Peace Volunteers initiative. It was agreed that although there is relative peace in the state, Michika and Madagali communities still need to embrace peace for more humanitarian assistance.
