What motivated you to join the presidential race?
I joined the presidential race because a succession of illegitimate and corrupt governments in Nigeria has continued to subvert national development and impoverish our people. As popularly stated that “evil triumphs when good people do nothing” so I understand the challenges in Nigeria.
We cannot continue like this. We can do much better as a people. An NCP government will establish integrity, justice, peace, security and prosperity. It is my duty to God and to my compatriots to serve my country.
Many view the elections as a straight battle between PDP and APC. What do you think are your chances in the race?
The overwhelming majority, about 78% of Nigerians from independent surveys, have rejected both factions of the old, recycled, corrupt and failed ruling class. Nigerians are demanding for an authentic alternative.
The NCP, founded by the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, has a history and legacy of integrity, justice and patriotism. We have fielded the best candidates using the universal criteria of vision, vigour, integrity, competence and national acceptability. The NCP will most definitely win the presidential election this year, if it is free and fair.
Unfortunately, both factions of the illegitimate and corrupt leaders of Nigeria have been desperately trying to pre-rig the elections. They have both violated several laws of Nigeria. Their incumbents are abusing their positions and using state officials, resources, facilities and institutions for their campaigns.
They are also using slush funds. They are violating, with impunity, the provisions of the Electoral Act in Section 91 on election finance limits. Both parties have an intolerable record of violence and both have been avoiding a fair presidential debate. They know that they cannot win free and fair elections, so they are desperate to pre-rig the elections.
There are indications that nine presidential candidates of various political parties might shelve their ambitions and declare support for President Jonathan. Are you also thinking in that line?
We cannot think in that line as that is clearly contrary to our mission, which is to take over the government of Nigeria democratically and abolish poverty by progressively reducing the poverty rate very drastically every year. We advise Dr Jonathan and General Buhari to drop their ambitions and support the NCP in the national interest.
The NCP will be happy to accept them, take their inputs for good governance and work with them for accelerated national development. The nine parties have made their choice within their political rights. But we think that a more patriotic position would have been to support the NCP as we would most definitely guarantee the security, welfare and prosperity of our people far better than the incumbent.
The National Bureau of Statistics previously concluded that the proportion of Nigerians living in poverty has been increasing every year under the incumbent. It would have been more patriotic if they had decided to support the NCP.
Are you satisfied with the postponement of the elections by INEC?
INEC has the constitutional authority to organize elections in Nigeria. INEC must not be coerced, especially since it is supposed to be independent. The overbearing influence of the ruling party is inappropriate.
How do you intend to enhance the quality of governance and economic rights of the people if elected?
The primary purpose of government in Nigeria is the security and welfare of the people. We will firmly control corruption. We will improve the security and welfare of all Nigerians and abolish poverty in Nigeria. The NCP manifesto has our 10-Care program that was developed to achieve the abolition of poverty.
Our 10-Care programme includes employment, food, water, housing, health, electricity, energy, transportation, telecommunications and security care. Our ‘Accelerated Development Agenda’ outlines the strategies to achieve these.
How would you tackle the problem of insurgency and what are your plans for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) if elected?
The senseless and cowardly Boko Haram insurgents must be controlled. We will issue a stern warning with a short ultimatum for Boko Haram to surrender. We will motivate, train, equip and arm our security forces to improve intelligence, surveillance, response time and capacity. We will go on the offensive against Boko Haram.
Our security forces are better trained and outnumber Boko Haram. We will most definitely expel Boko Haram from our territory. We will address the socio-economic deviations that resulted from mis-governance like, corruption, impunity, unemployment, poverty, etc, which are associated with high crime rate. We will have to secure the communities of our IDPs and encourage them to go back home. We will also provide support for rehabilitation of IDPs.
What is your assessment of the level of adherence to the non-violence pact signed by all presidential candidates?
The lawlessness and desperation of both factions of our illegitimate and corrupt leaders will not even allow them to comply with our laws, talk of an accord without sanctions for deviations.
Since the accord was signed, so many persons have lost their lives to violence sponsored by both factions. May God help us.
