The Interim National Working Committee, INWC of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP under the leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, has scheduled a Special National Convention to ratify former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
The special convention has been slated for Saturday in the Wuse area of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
Recently, during its screening exercise for aspirants the PDP faction has given a waiver to the former president, saying that he did not need to appear for screening.
Former governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, explained that having served as president, acting president, vice president, governor, deputy governor, Jonathan did not need to appear for any screening.
Even though the Bayelsa born politician had not publicly disclosed his intention to contest the 2027 election, various groups and individuals have been calling on him to join the race.
Apart from the visit by the Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, to Jonathan, the former President has not been seen close to the party office or seen to have purchased any nomination form.
Recently, youth groups visited him at his Abuja office calling on him to contest the election, but the former President told his visitors to go and get their PVCs to participate activily in coming election.
In a notice seen by Daily Trust and signed by factional National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, and National Organising Secretary, Theophilus Dakas Shan, the notice said the event will take place on Saturday.
The invitation described the event as a “Special National Convention for the Ratification of the Nomination of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party. “
The action of the PDP faction might not be unconnected with the decision of the Federal High Court in Abuja which declared Jonathan eligible to participate in the 2027 presidential election.
The judge noted that both a Federal High Court in Yenagoa and a Court of Appeal had already held that Jonathan was eligible, and described the suit as an abuse of court process.
