The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker representing Zango Kataf/Jaba Federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Sunday Marshall Katung has distributed bags of fertilizers to rural farmers in Southern Kaduna.
The gesture, according to the lawmaker, is geared towards boosting the development of Agriculture as well as to encourage local farmers to go back to farm after battling with insecurity in the area.
The fertilizers, worth over N10million, was distributed to farmers in Zonkwa and Zango-Kataf local government areas of the state.
Beneficiaries include farmers drawn from traditional rulers, tribal associations, welders association, motorcycle groups, road transport workers, women groups, co-operative societies, Christian Association of Nigeria and the Ja’amatu Nasir Islam, among others.
Katung who was represented at the ceremony on Friday by the former Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Yohanna Allahmagani, described the gesture as timely as majority of Nigerians are going back to farm because of the prevailing hardship.
According to him, the fertilizers are given out free of charge to the people. He decried the security situation in the area, saying it has caused a lot of setbacks. He however noted that farmers in the area need a lot of encouragement so as to go back to farm.
He therefore called on government at all levels to find a lasting solution to the security challenge in the area.
Earlier, the chairman of the occasion and former commissioner of Information, Ben Bako described the gesture as crucial to the survival of the people.
Also, the women leader in the area, Mary Ephraim commended the lawmaker adding that the fertilizer came at the right time.
“With the situation in the country now, farming is the key to survival and we thank the lawmaker who has come to help the farmers with fertilizers," she said.
