PDP state chairs back Damagum; Abdulrahman asks INEC to cancel convention

State chairmen of the leading opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday rose from a meeting in Abuja and dissociated themselves from the leadership of the Abdulrahaman Mohammed-led faction of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and fully declared their support for Umar Damagum.
The chairmen expressed their support to the leadership of the Damagun-led executives and charged delegates to the November 15th and 16th elective National Convention in Ibadan to continue their preparations.
The development is coming as the Abdulrahman Muhammed led faction has also written a letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), asking the commission not to attend or monitor the convention because of the Abuja High Court judgement.
In a communique at the end of their meeting signed by the Forum Chairman and Chairman of the PDP in Edo State, Tony Aziegbemi, and Forum Secretary and Chairman of the party in Kaduna State, Edward Masha, the chairmen reaffirmed their commitment to the unity, progress of the PDP across the country.

Meanwhile, the faction of the party loyal to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has written to INEC not to monitor the convention following the judgment of the Abuja Federal High Court.
The letter a copy seen by Daily Trust was signed by Abdulrahman Muhammed, factional acting National Chairman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Secretary.
On his part, the National Chairman of the party, Umar Damagum, has warned that karma will visit those working against the unity and progress of the party.
The Chairman described some of the developments in the party as acts of betrayal by some members and a grave injustice to an institution that has given them political identity and relevance.
Damagum, who spoke on Thursday during a meeting with 26 PDP state chairmen in Abuja, said despite the ongoing internal crisis, the PDP remains vibrant, resilient, and fully prepared for its elective national convention scheduled for Ibadan.
He also urged aggrieved members to retrace their steps, stressing that loyalty and unity remain key to the PDP’s survival.
Damagum maintained that the party’s forthcoming convention in Ibadan would mark a new beginning for the PDP.
