The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his response to the worsening security situation in the country, saying the cancellation of his planned trips to South Africa and Angola falls far short of what the moment demands.

The party said the President should not remain in the comfort of the Presidential Villa while Nigerians are under attack, insisting he ought to lead from the front .

In a statement in Abuja, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, described the trip cancellation as “the latest and boldest example of tokenism.” 

He said that although the gesture may appear sympathetic, it remains “a mere perfunctory action and nothing more.”

He said if the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government disagrees with this assessment, “then we demand that President Tinubu temporarily relocate to Kebbi State and other theatres of armed conflict in Northern Nigeria. Such a move will not only challenge the security agencies to act more decisively in ending the ongoing carnage but will also boost the morale of the troops on the frontline.”

 

The opposition party urged the President to demonstrate true leadership “by leading from the front, as true leaders do in moments of grave national challenge.”

 

Citing the recent attacks in Kwara State, the PDP said insecurity has now become the lived reality of Nigerians nationwide, yet the APC administration continues to rely on “outright denials, rationalised explanations, empty assurances, and other superficial gestures such as the president’s cancelled trip.”
