Peace Corps of Nigeria, PCN, a youth based organization said it would generate about 800,000 jobs if its bill at the National Assembly is eventually passed.
This was disclosed by the PCN National Commandant Dicksoh Akoh during the end-of-year and annual lecture of the corps held in Abuja recently.
Akoh who urged the youths not to allow themselves to be used by unpatriotic elements in the society to cause chaos, said as a youth oriented and empowerment organization it has always been at the forefront in ensuring that Nigerian youths play active roles in nation building.
He said that the organization recently enrolled over 30,000 youths across the country in its various youth training programmes.
He said that the bill when passed will empower, develop and provide alternative employment for the youths to facilitate peace, community services and nation-building.
Akoh explained that the Nigerian Peace Corps (NPC) Bill has been re-introduced in the House of Representatives and it has scaled the first reading.
Recall that the NPC Bill had earlier scaled through second reading in both the Senate and House of Reps in the 7th Assembly but was not passed before the end of the tenure of the Assembly.
The bill is expected to be passed by both chambers of the National Assembly.
In his lecture entitled, “The role of youth organizations in the promotion of social change: The future of the Nigerian state,” Professor Sam Egwu of Political Science Department of University of Jos said that any society bereft of youth development initiatives is doomed to fail, urging government at all levels to make meaningful contributions to empower the youths.
