The Kano State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to hasten approval of uniform minimum pension for the Nigerian Pensioners.

A statement from the union, signed by the union’s Chairman, Comrade Balarabe I. Gwarzo, suggested that the minimum wage applicable to workers should also be applied to pensioners.

The union explained that the gesture if approved would better the lives of many pensioners, as according to him going by the current economic crisis, the lives of pensioners need support from the federal government.

The union commended President Buhari for directing all states’ governors to offset all the outstanding liabilities of pensioners through the excess deductions for external debt service.

“The governors were directed to offset all outstanding gratuities, pension arrears, death benefits and severance benefits to former political appointees,” said the statement.

The union also thanked the president for offsetting pensioners’ benefits including pension arrears, death benefits and other entitlements of pensioners at the federal level.
