According to a press release signed by Public Relation Officer of the ministry, Sani Tanko, Yakubu was selected for the award in recognition of his contribution to the greener Kano project. “He championed the zeal to protect, promote and empower people through sustainable agricultural practices at the grassroots level,” the release said.  It added that he had also contributed towards the establishment of the same project in Jigawa and Katsina chapters of the Nigerian Environmental Society.  The statement which quoted the president of the Society Mr Uche Agbanusi, as saying Yakubu was the only Northerner pencilled for the award this year, added that the recipient reiterated his determination to ensure greener environment in Kano and in the nation in general.
