If you are optimistic about the pain relief you will experience, you are likely to experience significant pain relief. On the other hand, if you are pessimistic about how well the medication will relieve your pain, you are likely to experience less relief from your pain.

Unlike earlier research has been conducted on this topic, this study used brain imaging techniques. With this type of imaging, scientists were able to better examine the regions of the brain known to be related to pain.

Until now, not much research has been done to really dig in and determine how our expectations will affect our experience with medications, or to clarify the mechanisms in the brain that control how our expectations will affect medications.

Researchers caused volunteers to experience pain by using a heat source. While administering pain medication, they scanned the brains of the volunteers. Researchers used Ultiva, a drug usually used during surgery that is administered intravenously.

The researchers report that those who had a negative outlook did not experience as much pain relief as those with a positive outlook. A positive outlook, result in the drug’s effects being doubled. Researchers told some of the volunteers that they would not receive any medication. These volunteers reported that their pain became worse, though, they actually did receive the same medication, at the same dose, as those who knew they were receiving pain medication.

MRI brain scans were used throughout the study to examine the effects. The volunteers that were expecting pain, had more activity in the brain areas associated with anxiety and memory versus when they expected relief.
