Pharmacists launch foundation to support research , healthcare delivery

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has launched a foundation to support research, healthcare and humanitarian services in the country.
President of the society, Pharmacist Ahmed Yakasai said the foundation was established to develop innovative and sustainable approaches to curb challenges of healthcare delivery and help improve healthcare systems in the country.
Yakasai said even though the society in its 90-year-existence had contributed to the advancement of the health sector and national development, he said there was need to have a foundation that would focus entirely on these and other activities in a more sustainable way.
He said the society has made donations to displaced persons in Borno, and Yobe State as well as donation of drugs during meningitis outbreaks, among others ,
The PSN boss said the foundation would promote research and development ,provide education about the field of pharmacy practice in Nigeria, cater for the welfare of pharmacists and other Nigerians and also have the mandate to impact on the welfare and well being of all Nigerians.
He said this would be done through public health campaigns and programmes , fight against fake, substandard and falsified drugs, drug abuse, advocacy for childhood and family health diseases and maternal and child health.
He added that the foundation would also present awards of recognition of excellence to serving pharmacists, groups and individuals periodically.
Members of the Board of Trustees of the foundation inaugurated include: Pharm. Mohammed Yaro Budah, as chairman, Pharm Lere Baale, Vice chairman, Pharm. Remi Adeseun, secretary, Pharm Ike John Igwu, treasurer and Pharm Margaret Ebigwelu –Ibru Public Relations Officer, among others.
Chairman, PSN Foundation Launching Planning Committee, and immediate past chairman of the FCT chapter of the society , Pharm. Bridget Otote said the foundation couldn’t have come at a better time considering the outbreak of diseases, and disasters in the country.
Launching the foundation, Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole commended PSN for the initiative saying that inorder to tackle the challenges in the health sector, new approaches were required and the establishment of the foundation was one of them.
