Millions of voters headed to the polls to elect a new president in the Philippines, with a tough-talking mayor taking a big lead, according to unofficial tallies.
Even before Monday’s election, Rodrigo Duterte, the long-serving mayor of the southern city of Davao, was leading in public opinion polls by as much as 10 percentage points over his nearest rivals, Senator Grace Poe and Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas, the preferred candidate of outgoing President Benigno Aquino.
The 71-year-old Duterte has gained support with his profanity-filled speeches pledging to combat crime and corruption – and to execute criminals.
