The Emir of Gombe, Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III, has said greater collaboration among traditional institutions remains a vital instrument for promoting national unity, peace, security and cultural preservation across the country.
He stated this during a courtesy visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Mallam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, at his palace in Zaria.
Abubakar III, who is also the Chairman of the Gombe State Council of Emirs and Chiefs, stressed the need for closer engagement among traditional rulers in addressing issues affecting national cohesion and grassroots development.
Explaining the purpose of the visit, the Gombe Emir said it provided an opportunity for the two monarchs to further strengthen the longstanding historical ties between their emirates.
“This visit is not the first, and it is aimed at promoting the spirit of brotherhood, unity and solidarity among our emirates,” he said.
Daily Trust reports that the relationship between the Zazzau and Gombe Emirates dates back more than two centuries and is rooted in their shared historical and Islamic heritage.
The Zazzau Emirate, which evolved from the ancient Hausa Kingdom of Zazzau, was incorporated into the Sokoto Caliphate following the 19th-century jihad led by Usman dan Fodio, while the Gombe Emirate was established in 1809 by Buba Yero, one of dan Fodio’s leading lieutenants.
Since then, both emirates have remained influential traditional institutions in Northern Nigeria, with their rulers often engaging through regional and national traditional councils to promote peace, unity and development.
The Emir said regular consultations among royal fathers remain essential to strengthening peace, enhancing security, preserving Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and fostering national integration.
He also commended the leadership of the Emir of Zazzau, describing traditional rulers as indispensable partners in complementing government efforts towards sustainable development and peaceful coexistence.
Responding, the Emir of Zazzau, Mallam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, said the visit reaffirmed the enduring relationship among Nigeria’s traditional institutions and demonstrated their shared commitment to national unity.
He noted that the historic ties between the Zazzau and Gombe Emirates date back to the 19th-century Islamic reform movement led by Usman dan Fodio, which laid the foundation for good governance, scholarship and peaceful coexistence across Northern Nigeria.
Bamalli observed that preserving such historic relationships was vital to strengthening dialogue, mutual understanding and cooperation among traditional emirates.
He said such collaboration was particularly significant at a time when the country was facing security and socio-economic challenges.
The Emir reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that promote peace, education, community development and national integration.
He urged Nigerians to embrace unity and tolerance in the interest of sustainable development.
Special prayers were offered during the visit for peace, stability and prosperity in Kaduna and Gombe states, as well as the country at large.
