People with disability under the auspices of Rights and Privileges of Persons with Disability Development Initiative have appealed to Kano state government to provide them with more political appointments in the state.

Chairman of the initiative, Malam Is’haq S. Is’haq Wuna who made the plea in Kano, said a survey conducted by the initiative had indicated that physically challenged persons in the state were not been given the attention they deserve when it comes to political appointments.

Wuna lamented that physically challenged persons were being treated by politicians with disgust, saying, “we want the state government to provide slots for commissioner and special adviser to physically challenged persons so that they can man their affairs properly.”

He also advocated for a slot of chairmanship in two or three local governments out of the 44 local government areas of the state, adding that nine councillors (three from each senatorial districts) out of 484 councillor positions in the state should be assign to physically challenged persons.

“Physically challenged persons like other categories of people have intellectuals and can make meaningful contributions to the development of the society. Our disability is not inability. In the developed countries and indeed some African countries, physically challenged persons are given chance to live a recognized life,” he noted.

At the federal level, President Muhammadu Buhari had assigned special adviser for the less privileged and physically challenged persons with a view to improving their living standard.

He, however, lamented that Kano state government instead of appointing special adviser, it appointed an assistant which weakens the position of the special adviser.

He faulted the state government for its failure to sustain the monthly allowances being given to physically challenged persons in the state, noting that, the families of both late Sarkin Guragu Alhaji Salisu Nazara and late Galadiman Kutare Mallam Amadu Halliru were not given any assistance by the government.
