He called on criminal elements operating within the ECOWAS maritime sub-region of Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Togo, Niger and Benin Republic to desist from their nefarious activities.
Speaking in Calabar over the weekend when commissioning some major Nigerian Navy projects completed by the Flag Officers Commanding (FOC) Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Obiora Charles Medani, the CNS asserted that contemporary trans-border criminal elements posed serious security challenges to the economic survival of member states since those elements neither recognise nor respect borders; hence the need for collaborative action to flush them out. He said the Nigerian Navy was equipped and prepared to protect all the country’s economic installations, including the maritime boundaries.
The CNS commended the ECOWAS Commission for taking bold steps to tackle the regional maritime security challenges, and reassured that they stood to benefit immensely from the ECOWAS security umbrella.
