The Plateau State chapter of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) on Thursday said the Nigerian Army has promised to repair houses and vehicles burnt and destroyed by soldiers attached to Operation Enduring Peace in Jong and Luggere communities of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
The State’s Chairman of MACBAN, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, confirmed the development, explaining that the Sector 4 commander of the Operation visited the communities and promised to repair the damages.
The group had on Tuesday accused soldiers attached to Sector 4 of launching an abrupt attack, destroying vehicles, and burning houses, food items, clothes, generators, and other valuable items.
The group also alleged that the soldiers took away tin worth millions of naira.
However, the group’s chairman said the army visited the affected communities on Thursday to plead with them over the destruction of property.
He said, “The Sector 4 commander visited the communities and pleaded with us over the losses. The commander confirmed to us during the visit that he didn’t give any order to that effect. He also promised to repair the damaged vehicles and houses burned.”
The MACBAN chairman also assisted the affected victims who lost their belongings with food items, noting that, “they brought some bags of rice, gari, and other foodstuffs to cushion the effect of what happened to them (communities).”
Babayo appreciated the concern shown by the military sector commander over what the soldiers had caused, calling on the army to fulfil the promises.
He said, “The victims have lost millions of naira worth of property. They really need assistance because their houses and other important items were burned.”
Our correspondent reports that the destruction of the herding communities came amid serious security tensions in communities of Barkin Ladi, Riyom, and Jos North, where over a dozen people were killed.
