Plateau govt warns poultry farmers against selling infected birds

“Farmers must desist from selling their sick birds in order to avert further spread of the disease, because the more you take sick birds to the market within or outside the state, the further and quicker the disease spreads. Instead of just taking your birds to the markets, once you notice any funny behaviour from your birds, report to the appropriate authority for necessary and proper actions to be taken,” he said.
The veterinarian also called on poultry farmers to cooperate with government in its quest to completely wipe out chicken-related diseases from the state and country at large.
He urged farmers to report marketers who would prefer to take advantage of the existence of the disease to make quick money, adding that ‘’farmers should cooperate with government in terms of reporting those who will want to make quick money using the outbreak of the disease, and truncating effort of government in the fight against its spread.”
He explained further that the selling of sick birds by poultry farmers remained the bane of the fight against the hydra-headed disease in the country, adding, ‘’selling sick birds to marketers has been the challenge that government is facing in its quest to eradicate the disease. When sick birds are taken to the markets, other animals will contact the disease and human beings will come and buy the chickens for personal consumption which can transmit the disease into the human system.’’
