‘Plateau higher institutions are short-staffed’

Higher institutions in Plateau State are facing severe teacher shortage, Joint Unions of Plateau State Owned Tertiary Institutions (JUPTI) has said.

The unions made the observation in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Comrade Paul Dakagol and Secretary, Solomon Ayum after a meeting at College of Health Technology, Zawan.

The unions said that state-owned tertiary institutions have remained the most under staffed institutions of higher learning in the country.

The statement reads, “The last recruitment was done in 2006 and since then the institutions have witnessed various retirements, deaths, disengagement etc without replacement,

“Most of the institutions now depend largely on part-time and casual staff which are frowned at by various supervisory bodies and contravene the International Labour Law (ILO).” It said.

The union said that if the situation wasn’t addressed urgently, the institutions might be heading to a total collapse.

It said, “The unions shall not hesitate to take necessary industrial action if government fails to address the issue within 14 working days.”

The state-owned tertiary institutions in the state included College of Health Technology, Pankshin, College of Education, Gindiri, Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi and College of Health Technology, Zawan among others.
