Community health centres, primary and secondary schools, as well as civil society organisations in Jos have called on people of the state to imbibe the culture of tree planting to protect and sustain the environment.

The call came from participants at the commemoration of the World Environment Day.

The event’s highlight was the distribution of trees and seedlings to them and other partners for onward planting in their various schools/wards/places of work.

Mary Itse, a teacher, who represented LEA Kyan Rikkos in Jos North, said Plateau communities were blessed with good scenery and splendid vegetation, and when backed by expanded tree planting, the state would become a more beautiful place to behold.

She said fruit trees in schools excited pupils and provided source of good nutrition to them.

Garos Tok of Government Secondary School Nyango-Gyel in Jos South pointed out that trees had been effective in tackling erosion in schools where it has threatened to destroy classes.

The Director of Programmes, Christian Rural and Urban Development Association of Nigeria, organisers of the event, Tobi Salawu,, called the people to imbibe the habit of tree planting in order to help the society and humanity at large.

He warned against the indiscriminate dumping of waste as this would harm the ecosystem.

He commended the state government for its effort in environmental sustainability.
