Stakeholders in Plateau State have met to discuss biometric digital registration for tricycles, an initiative aimed at improving security and boosting revenue generation.

The biometric registration, which involves the issuance of QR codes to all tricycle riders and owners, will enable security agencies and commuters to verify operators’ identities.

Beyond enhancing safety, the initiative is also designed to reduce revenue leakages and improve accountability in the transport sector.

The brainstorming session in Jos, the state capital, took place during the official presentation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Transport and GIOPAT DC Limited for the implementation of the Intelligent Transport and Traffic Management System (ITTMS).

The Plateau State Chairman of the Tricycle Owners and Riders Union of Nigeria (TRUN), Markus Yakubu Jatau, said the union is ready to cooperate with the initiative. He explained that although there was initial resistance, members later understood the value of the project and decided to support it.

Salis Abdulsalam, Liaison Officer of GIOPAT DC, said the QR code will allow commuters to confirm details of riders and share information if necessary.

He added that the system eliminates the use of paper tickets by introducing a POS-integrated digital payment platform that directs funds into government accounts.

Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Davou Jatau Gyang, said the system will document every rider and tricycle owner, adding that the digital ticketing process will also ensure transparency in revenue collection and improve data management for transport planning.

Representatives of the Plateau State Police Command, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), vigilante groups, the DSS, transport unions, and traditional and religious leaders pledged their support for the project.

While the Chairman of Jos South, Hon. Silas Dung, endorsed the initiative, his Jos North counterpart, Hon. John Kyoro, raised community concerns and requested more time before full implementation in his area.
