Barko, who made the pledge during a field day visit to wheat farms in Jos South and Mangu local council areas, said the ministry would support farmers with inputs, machines and other facilities and might sink boreholes for irrigation during the dry season farming.
“Plateau was initially not considered in the Agricultural Transformation Agenda in the area of wheat. We are liaising with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to ensure that Plateau wheat farmers are included in the wheat ATA programme,” he said
Barko, who was represented by Daniel Dyelong, stressed that Plateau State has a very good comparative advantage over other states in production of wheat.
“Our soil can produce it in the dry season as well as in the wet season,’’ Bako said.
He advised the farmers to form cooperatives and wheat farmers associations to enable them benefit more from government, pointing out that government preferred to deal with groups than individuals.
