Jang told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Monday that the Riyom General Hospital was being upgraded to cater for trauma patients, including “lots of road accident victims’’ on the Abuja-Jos highway.
“The area has also been crises-ridden, so instead of rushing victims of crises or attacks to Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) or Plateau Special Hospital, such victims could easily be taken to that hospital,’’ he said.
He said that the hospital would be equipped with modern facilities to handle urgent cases so as to save lives and avoid situations where people die due to delay in getting help.
Jang said that the state government was paying special attention to the health sector, with projects worth more than N7 billion awarded to boost healthcare delivery.
The special adviser said that cottage hospitals in all the local governments were being upgraded to General Hospitals, each with 60 bed capacity to handle cases in the rural areas.
“Currently, people rush to JUTH for every minor health situation and we do not think that is right,’’ he said.
Jang expressed government’s commitment to reducing the infant and maternal mortality, and explained that more personnel and facilities were being provided in Primary Health Centres (PHCs).
“We have provided more ambulances, laboratory and large power generating plants to strengthen the PHCs to help the rural dwellers and shall do even more to make health services available to all,’’ he said.
