The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Doknan Decent Sheni, said the programme was aimed at building the capacity of the next generation to address future security challenges in the state and the nation at large.
Speaking at the matriculation ceremony of students for the 2014/2015 academic session, Professor Sheni said as part of restructuring and repositioning of the institution to international standard, the institution earmarked on developmental programmes including infrastructural development, curriculum development, equity in admissions, parity in employment, networking with other universities and introduction of new programmes as well as collaboration with the NSA of Israel to mount homeland security programmes in the university.
Sheni added that Plateau had experienced sectarian crises for many years, hence the need to have a mechanism in place that would build the capacity of the next generation to address future occurrence and acquire vast skills in management of security.
“In our avowed commitment to push through the challenges of growth and development as a university, we are today adding to our fold over 600 undergraduates. This number, when added to the existing undergraduates will put pressure on our existing facilities. However, we are optimistic that these challenges would be over soon, when our ongoing projects are completed,” he said.
Sheni advised the students to strive to excel not at all cost but by hard work, commitment and dedication to their academic pursuits, adding, “while we are resolved to give you the very best, you must also exhibit the desire to learn. I also urge you to distance yourself from any form of negative vices such as exam malpractice, cultism and indiscipline as there are appropriate penalties that go with such misdemeanour. I urge you to always toe the part of dialogue rather than confrontation if you have any issue that requires management’s attention.”
