The Federal University of Education, Pankshin, Plateau State, has uncovered a syndicate involved in producing fake certificates bearing the institution’s name. The acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jere Ndazhaga, who disclosed this on Monday during a press conference in Jos, said several forged certificates were recovered during investigation.
According to him, the syndicate was exposed when an individual presented a suspicious certificate at the university’s Examinations and Records Section and that the alertness of staff led to the involvement of the university’s security unit and the police.
Two suspects, Mr Friday Tunkyes and Mr Harvey Obed Ringsum, were arrested and found in possession of multiple forged certificates of various academic qualifications, as well as official embossing stamps of the institution.
Professor Ndazhaga said the suspects were prosecuted by the police, convicted and sentenced to one and a half years imprisonment each.
He further said, “This serves as a deterrent to others,” stressing that the university would not tolerate actions that undermined the value of education or its reputation. He urged employers and members of the public to be vigilant and properly verify certificates presented for employment.
