18-year old Iliya Raymond and Patience Dahyop all from Plateau State have won the fifth edition of Senator Douye Diri Marathon race in male and female categories respectively over the weekend in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.
The marathon otherwise tagged “SDD Bayelsa Marathon” had the elite athletes running for 21km race from Bayelsa Palm road to Peace park in Yenagoa, while the Teens category ran for 10km from Opolo Market to Peace park and the Leisure/Plus size fun race which spanned 3km from Ekeki Motor Park to Peace park.
The competition, organized by the Bayelsa Marathon Club, in conjunction with the state Ministry of Sports Development, had 471 athletes across the country participating.
Mrs Gloria Diri, wife of the Bayelsa State Governor, who presented medals and cheques to winners of the 21 km Marathon race, encouraged more young Bayelsans to embrace sports and build a career in it.

Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports Development, Dr. Daniel Igali, assured that the competition would assume an international status in the next edition.
Lead organiser, Odonkumo Igbeita, appreciated the Bayelsa State Government and Governor Douye Diri, for his supporting the annual event.
The winner of the elite category took home N1m while the winner of the teen category received N500,000 just as the winner in the fun category smiled home with N400,000.
