Governor Ibrahim Shekarau made the pledge while receiving the Director-General and other senior officials of the commission who paid him a courtesy visit at the government house. Shekarau who dwelt on the importance of the commission to the promotion of indigenous heritage stated that the government was ready to give support within limits of its resources to protect all monuments in the state.

He said the state did not have the financial capability to undertake the renovation of the famous Kano city walls but would welcome assistance from willing development partners to execute the project in view of its historical significance.

The governor noted that his administration was concerned about the encroachment on the city walls and had since revoked plots carved out of the walls among others.

Speaking earlier, the Director General of the commission, Alhaji Yusuf Abdallah Usman promised to work in collaboration with the state government and other stakeholders to enlist the Kano city walls and associate sites into the UNESCO World Heritage List.  Abdallah also announced plans to assist local communities in the state to establish community museums as part of an overall strategy of harnessing local resources to enhance community development.

He therefore requested the support of the state government in protecting the Kano city walls as well as provide technical and logistic support to the World Heritage Stakeholders committee on Kano city walls to achieve the desired goals.
