The Professional Fighters League (PFL) has announced plans to commence a martial arts league in Africa by the second quarter of 2025.
The PFL CEO, Peter Murray stated this yesterday during the launch of an international fight franchise which offers the right to start a martial art league in Africa.
He explained that the PFL Africa will introduce an engaging sport-season format with a regular season, playoffs, and championship featuring top African fighters with all events, adding that it would halt the talent drain on the African continent.
“Africa is home to some of the greatest fighters in the world, including our league Chairman Francis Ngannou, and some of the greatest fans in the sport. PFL Africa aims to serve the great fans with premium content while strengthening the PFL global footprint in what has for too long been an underserved market,”he said.
He added that the league’s presence in Africa would help develop martial arts sports at the grassroots level and deepen relationships with each country’s federation.
“We tend to partner with the stakeholders in the places they do martial arts, including grassroots and national federation, which is part of the vision of the sport at every level and we do that in the spirit of partnership,” he said.
He described Africa as a haven of boundless talents, stressing the league would increase the spread of the sports and strengthen its global footprint.
Also, the co-founder Helios Investment, Tope Lawani added that Africa boasts of teeming young ones who need the opportunities to showcase their talents, saying the league would serve as a breeding ground for talent discovery.
“African talent has had disproportionate success on the global MMA stage and MMA currently has a scarcity of events despite significant demand, creating a huge opportunity for growth as young Africans consume more digital content on their devices,” he said.
