A 40 year-old plumber, Emeka Okpala, has drowned while installing pumping machine in a well at Oladogba Street in the Ikosi-Ketu area of Lagos.
Eko Trust gathered that when the owner of the well wanted to install a submersible pumping machine, those who were initially asked to do the job turned it down, claiming that the well was old.
“But, when Okpala was contacted, he said he could do it since it was not his first time of doing such. He tied a rope to a generator and was descending the well when the generator fell on him and crushed him in the well,” an eyewitness, Femi Fowojobi, said.
Fowojobi added that a woman in the house, who also witnessed what had happened, went to call Okpala’s relatives, while officials of the fire service were later alerted.
He said it took a long time before help could come the way of the victim. “The firefighters brought him out of the well and took him to the hospital. But by the time they got to Ketu, the man gave up the ghost.”
A landlord in the area, Alhaji Ajibola Salami said that the deceased plumber was very hardworking and popular in the area, while the police in Ketu division confirmed the incident.
