The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Ekiti State police command has arrested a 14-man syndicate in connection with the abduction of one Akiode Akinyemi, a student of Crown Polytechnic, Odo-Ekiti.
The police public relations officer, ASP Sunday Abutu, said yesterday that a gang of suspected kidnappers sneaked into the hostel apartment of the victim, blindfolded him and whisked him away to an unknown destination.
Abutu added that after sometimes, the suspects, through phone calls, started demanding for ransom to be paid as the only condition for the release of Akinyemi.
He said that N2.2million was paid as ransom by the victim’s family members into eight different bank accounts as provided by the suspects.
He added that the RRS operatives swung into action, and on June 23, 2021, arrested 14 suspects in connection with the abduction.
He said 10 of the suspects were students of the Crown Polytechnic.
According to him, all the arrested suspects confessed to the crime, saying the N2.2million collected as random was shared among them.
