The FCT police command has arrested 141 persons in connection with various violations of the Abuja City regulation, and other criminal offences.
The operation which was carried out within the Wuse District in the City centre by the police of Wuse Zone 3 Division began on August 24, sources privy to the exercise said.
It was gathered that those arrested included 12 handbag and phone snatchers who have been terrorizing residents mostly around Green Areas. 21 suspected vandals, who were said to be disguising as scavengers were also arrested. Other defaulters include 51 suspected commercial sex workers.
The source further disclosed other arrested persons as: nine hard drugs peddlers operating within Wuse Zone 4 and also other areas with canals or forest terrain, 48 taxi and bus drivers accused of blocking some busy highways due to indiscriminate parking to pick up passengers from some undesignated parks.
About 91 items were also said to have been recovered during the exercise that comprised 48 impounded vehicles, 7 laptops, 16 handsets, 10 Ipads, 5 plasma TV sets, 4 sound speakers, 1 motorcycle, and also some unspecified number of knives and daggers.
Some of the suspects who were taken to the conventional courts have already been fined upon their conviction, while others were taken to the Keffi prison where they would serve for various jail terms. The 48 drivers were taken to the mobile court of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, and upon conviction were sentenced to 6 months imprisonment with option to pay five thousand naira fine.
Confirming the development, the FCT police command spokeperson, DSP Anjuguri Manzah said the operation would be extended to other areas of the City Centre with the record of such problems, once identified.
