Detectives from the Lagos State police command at the weekend arrested three smugglers of contraband goods they described as “notorious”.

 The detectives also impounded 220 bags of rice and several cartons of frozen poultry products carefully concealed in six vehicles.

 The suspects were allegedly arrested while heading towards the popular Daleko rice market, in the Mushin area of Lagos.

 The Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Chike Oti, said that the vehicles were intercepted by a team of policemen led by the Area Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Akinbayo Olasoji, while driving on the wrong way on the Daleko bridge.

 Oti said while four of the vehicles were found to be carrying 220 bags of rice, the other two had several cartons of frozen chicken and turkey. 

 He said the three suspects were arrested, while others escaped when they sighted the policemen. “The team of policemen was there to ensure one-way driving was disrupted when they arrested the smugglers who bring in chicken and turkey illegally,” he said.

 The Lagos State police spokesman, who handed over the seized vehicles to operatives of the Nigerian Customs Service attached to the Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, disclosed that the Lagos police boss, Imohimi Edgal, had warned smugglers to desist from the act, as he regarded them as enemies of the country’s economy.
