Police arrest 3 traffickers, rescue 6 children in Benue
Benue State police have arrested three women for alleged child trafficking and rescued six children who were being transported under suspicious circumstances along the Orokam-Enugu highway in the State.
In a statement on Friday, the Spokesperson of the command, DSP Udeme Edet, said the suspects included Monica Okonkwo, 57; Nkiru Nwosu, 55; and Oyechele Francisca, 57, all from Umude Oka in Dunukofia, Anambra State.
Edet said the suspects were intercepted on Thursday at about 5:05pm during a police routine patrol.
She explained that the women were found conveying six children identified as: Amanda Chukwujekwu (8), Chioma Maduagwu (8), Oyechegi Kosisochukwu (9), Okonkwo Odinaka Chukwu (9), Arinze Chukwu (7) and Oluchukwu Esther (9).
The police spokesperson added that preliminary investigations indicated that the children were taken from Divine Peace and Grace Orphanage in Jos, Plateau State, under unclear circumstances, with the suspects claiming they were transporting them to Anambra State.
Edet stated that the children had been safely rescued and placed under protective care, while the suspects are being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, has assured residents of his commitment to protecting lives and property across Benue State and pledged to provide further updates as investigations progress.
