Anambra State Police command has arrested six suspected armed robbers and recovered some firearms and ammunition.
The command also arrested 37 suspected cultists in their various hideouts across the state.
Confirming the arrest, spokesman of the police in the state, SP Haruna Mohammed, said on July 1, at about 5:50am, operatives of Operation Puff Adder, in conjunction with patrol team attached to Fegge Division at Upper Iweka, Onitsha, arrested one Ifeanyi Njoke from Agbor in Delta State.
He said the suspect belonged to the notorious ‘one-chance’ robbery syndicate terrorizing citizens at Upper Iweka and dispossessing them off their valuables.
“Exhibits recovered from the suspect included one locally made double barrel pistol with two rounds of live ammunition,” he said.
He said his case is still under investigation after which the suspect would be charged to court.
Mohammed added that on July 2, at about 4:30am, following a tipoff, operatives of Operation Puff Adder, in conjunction with the command’s Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), arrested the following suspected armed robbery syndicate members, Izuchukwu Ikwuabo, 35; Chidi Ihekuna (aka Legit), 34; Nonso Nnadozie (aka Small), 34; Chibueze George (aka Dove), 28; and Paul Ngwueche (aka Native Doctor), 26.
He said the suspects were arrested in their hideouts within Okija, Mgbidi in Imo State and Imuhu, in Enugu State.
The police spokesman said they have confessed to have participated in series of armed robbery and kidnapping incidents within Anambra State.
“Exhibits recovered from them include 12 rounds of 9mm ammunition and three ATM cards belonging to different victims of their robbery attacks,” he added.
Mohammed also revealed that the 37 suspected cultists were arrested in various raids carried out by the command.
