The Sokoto State Police Command has arrested five suspects for allegedly engaging in currency counterfeiting.
The police recovered an AK-47 rifle and 180 sheep during separate operations across the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, saying that the operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit uncovered a counterfeit currency network known as “Sai Malam”.
According to him, the Divisional Police Officer of Illela Division has transferred three suspects, Muhd Hamidu of Kwanni, Niger Republic, Umar Hassan and Sadik Isah of Illela Local Government Area to the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
Rufa’i said further intelligence led to the arrest of two additional suspects, Buhari Abubakar and Kasimu Muhammad, both of Makera Asada quarters in Sokoto Metropolis, saying that the command had successfully recovered counterfeit currency and fetish items believed to be used in the illegal operation by the suspects.
In a separate operation on March 10, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the command responded to a distress call about suspected members of the outlawed ‘Yan Sakai group in Dakalo village of Dange Shuni Local Government Area.
The group, led by one Sani Nabuzuwa, is suspected of being involved in cases of culpable homicide and cattle rustling.
“On sighting the police, the suspects opened fire but were subdued by the tactical team and fled into a nearby forest,” he said.
The Items recovered at the scene include “a fabricated AK-47 rifle, a magazine loaded with 11 rounds of live ammunition, 180 sheep suspected to have been stolen and a Kasea motorcycle”.
