The police in Kano State said they have arrested suspected fraudsters, who specialise in the use of social media platforms to lure victims with offers of romance, then forced them to hand over cash or be arrested.

Spokesman for the police command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, told newsmen in Kano that two of the suspects were arrested for allegedly defrauding victims through an online love romance on various social media accounts such as Facebook, X, WhatsApp or Instagram by posting pictures of beautiful women to seduce unsuspecting men.

“They would make contact with people through social media and messaging platforms to seduce men, and once victims were hooked, an appointment would be made.

‘’At that point, the suspects would appear in police uniforms with a threat to arrest them by accusing the victims of romancing married women.

The matter will then be settled after they had collected money for them,” he said.

Kiyawa stated that while efforts were ongoing to trace and identify other suspects, those arrested would be taken to court after investigation.
