The Police Command in Rivers State has confirmed the arrest of a lawyer following a shooting during a masquerade display in Omoku, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area.
The command’s spokesperson, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed the development to journalists in Port Harcourt.
She confirmed that the incident claimed one life, while eight others sustained gunshot injuries.
According to Iringe-Koko, the incident occurred on January 19 during a masquerade display by youths along Sambo Street in Omoku.
“The youths reportedly clashed with a lawyer and four officials of the Nigeria Forest Guards,” she said.
She added that the altercation escalated, resulting in shots being fired.
According to the spokesperson, nine masquerade participants in total sustained gunshot wounds during the incident.
“One victim, identified as Obulo, was confirmed dead at the hospital, while eight other injured persons are currently receiving treatment.
“The lawyer and two others were arrested and transferred to the State CID for a detailed investigation,” Iringe-Koko added.
She noted that the police have engaged with aggrieved youths to calm tensions, while a joint police-military patrol has been deployed to the area to maintain peace. (NAN)
