Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested a 22 years old man over alleged faking own kidnap to extort N25 million from his relations in the State
The suspect identified as Michael James, was arrested by the police during rescue operation in Idumuesah/Owa-Alero area of Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State.
The command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, said the police received a distress call that one Michael James of Idumuesah/Owa-alero road left home to dispose refuse but did not return.
He said thereafter, the kidnappers contacted the family, demanding a ransom of N25 million for his release.
According to him, working on technically generated intelligence, operatives cordoned the surrounding bushes for combing with a view to rescuing the victim.
Edafe said the suspect on noticing that the police were closing in on him, he suddenly came out from the bush claiming he escaped from his abductors.
He said during interrogation, the suspect confessed that he faked his own kidnap to get money from his relations.
He further stated that he spent certain money given to him by his sister; hence he planned his own kidnap so he could raise and replace the said money.
He said the suspect is in custody while investigation is ongoing and he would be charged to court.
