The police in Sokoto have arrested one Yahya Isah, a Niger national over possession of counterfeit US dollar notes as well as six suspects found smoking Indian hemp. The suspects were paraded at the state police headquarters in Sokoto yesterday. 

The Police Public Relations Officer, Sokoto Command, DSP Cordelia Nwawe, said the suspect with counterfeit dollars was arrested by a police team along Ilela garage area in Sokoto. 

“They arrested and found the suspect in possession of 14 hundred notes of American dollars reasonably suspected to be counterfeit,” she stated. 

The PPRO added that the suspect was also in possession of a bunch of papers cut to the size of currency notes. 

“During investigation, the suspect confessed to have got the said counterfeit dollars from one Gisa, also a Niger national now at large,” she stated. 

She gave the names of the other six suspects, as Sulaiman Ahmad, Abubakar Ahmad, Abdullahi Adamu, Usman Ibrahim, Shamsu Abdullahi and Abbas Dan Malam all of Sokoto metropolis. 

She said on April 2, a police joint patrol with vigilante group raided a criminal hideout at Ruggar Liman village, Kware LGA of Sokoto and arrested the six suspects under a mango tree. 

“They were found smoking Indian hemp,” she stated, adding that 13 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered at the scene. 

Nwawe also said the suspects could not give satisfactory account of themselves when questioned.  She said upon conclusion of investigations, the suspects would be charged to court for prosecution.
